CONSERVATIVE MEP FOR SCOTLAND

Statement on ETS Phase IV Rapporteurship

Short statement on the decision of the Environment Committee regarding rapporteurship of the ETS Phase IV reforms

06.07.2016.

At the request of my colleagues on the Environment Committee I have agreed to continue in my role as rapporteur on the reform of the Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS iv), pending any change in parliamentary rules in relation to UK MEPs.

Throughout my time as rapporteur, I have sought to build consensus and secure compromise. I believe that this approach will be particularly important in the months ahead. Together with my shadow rapporteurs I will continue to seek the right balance between our global climate commitments (strengthened post-Paris) and the need to provide appropriate safeguards to our industries which allow them to innovate and to grow.

With only 670 amendments to my draft report I am confident that we can strike that balance in good time.

I will also do all I can to ensure that the UK remains committed to European carbon trading, whatever my country’s relationship with the EU.
