My letter to Ukrainian government in support of LGBTI rights

As a Vice-president of the LGBTI inter-group, my colleagues and I in the European Parliament have been monitoring the progress of LBGTI rights in Ukraine in recent years. Despite the progress made on human rights we are concerned by recent developments on LGBTI rights and have written to the government of Ukraine to express our concerns.

Over the past years, Ukraine has made remarkable progress towards becoming a democratic country which respects human rights and the rights of LGBTI people.

That being said, recent developments in the country are worrisome. There are concerns the country’s new Labour Code fails to protect LGBTI persons from discrimination and that the deadline for legalising civil partnerships will now not be met.

We urge the Ukrainian government not to backslide on its human rights commitments.
