Duncan welcomes extra cash for dairy farmers
Ian Duncan, the Conservative MEP for Scotland, has welcomed 500 million euros of support for dairy farmers across Europe, currently struggling due to low market prices. Ian has also called for clarity as to how much of this money will reach Scottish farmers and when.
Commenting at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Ian said,
"The multimillion Euro fund for dairy farmers is of course welcome, particularly at a time when farmers are having to cope with low prices. Having spoken to and met many representatives from the farming community over the past few months, it is clear to me that the European Commission had to act, and they have. "However, what is not clear is how much of this money will be making its way to Scotland; or indeed when.
"The Commission was less than clear last night when pressed by the UK Government, although they have said that further details will be announced on Friday. The funding is welcome but it is not a sliver bullet. The Scottish Government has to get a grip on the problems facing farmers and use the powers it has. For months I have been calling on Richard Lochhead to speed up payments to farmers, who are already struggling with a computer payments system which is not fit for purpose. I urge him to act now and support farmers through these challenging times."
